Study of the Kawasaki Art Museum (1) : Consideration of the text of the Kawasaki Art Museum and the Baron Kawasaki Collection

川崎美術館研究 ㈠　文献資料からたどる川崎美術館と神戸川崎男爵家コレクション

明治23年 (1890) 9月6日、神戸市布引の川崎正蔵邸に開館した川崎美術館は日本初の私立美術館と考えられている。本稿では、川崎美術館と神戸川崎男爵家コレクションに関する研究の端緒として、同時代の新聞・雑誌等の文献資料から、川崎美術館と神戸川崎男爵家コレクションの歴史をたどる。

Baron Kawasaki Shozo was an important businessman in Kobe and Japan from the Meiji to the Taisho era. He collected a lot of Japanese and East Asian Arts not for himself but for Japanese people and history. In 1890, he established a private museum ‟The Kawasaki Art Museum” in his house in Kobe city. Although this museum is the first private museum in Japan, the Kawasaki Art Museum have been forgotten in the history of Kobe, Japanese art and museum. This report is a start of study about the Kawasaki Art Museum. In this report, the articles or texts about the Kawasaki Art Museum and the Baron Kawasaki Collection are presented from the contemporary newspapers or magazines. These articles and texts make clear the importance of Kawasaki's Museum and Collection in the history.
